By Wafa Ghnaim

Palestinian women have created embroidered garments since the 11th century, including a long-sleeved dress called a thobe, produced by sewing together pieces of embroidered waste canvas. Guided by Wafa Ghnaim, learn the waste-canvas technique by embroidering a traditional Palestinian pattern on an 8-by-10-inch organic cotton drawstring pouch.

The workshop covers the basics of transferring a pattern to fabric, how to use waste canvas, threading a needle, the use of ombre thread, and two methods of cross-stitching. Students are provided several motif options suitable for to varying experience levels. Participants take home a multipurpose pouch, as well as guidance on managing waste-canvas projects.

All supplies are provided, but bring your favorite tweezers if you like. The session is open to students of all skill levels, and no experience is required.
