The Smithsonian Science Education Center is inviting your artist to a multi-day, virtual STEAM Master Class on the intersection of art and science in design!  Students in Grades 6-8 will discuss the impact design can have on the world, learn how to communicate scientific phenomena, and discover career paths that meet at the intersection of art and science with a Smithsonian graphic designer.

All levels of design experience are welcome in this course (including beginners).  A laptop or desktop computer is strongly recommended.  Students should also have access to an internet browser on that device to use during the class sessions.

The week prior to the class beginning, students will receive a welcome email with Zoom Link and any other pre-course information.

Virtual Class Schedule:
Monday, August 8, 2022:  We will discuss using design as a tool for communicating complex concepts and solving problems in a range of fields.  There will be a walk-through activity to get the students engaged in starting their design communicating a scientific process or procedure they are interested in.
Wednesday, August 10, 2022:  Instructor will lead some optional tutorials, but this will mainly be a time for informal co-collaboration and feedback.  Students will have open work time to continue designing their diagram, ask questions, and share ideas with other students.
Friday, August 12, 2022:  Virtual Presentation Day.  Each student will present their final product to the class.  This will also be an opportunity for students to learn about the different career paths that combine art, science, and design.

Registration Details:
This course is FREE and is limited to 25 middle school students.  Registration is first-come, first-serve, and you must complete the entire registration process on this webpage to be enrolled.  Once your transaction is complete, you will receive an email receipt from Smithsonian Associates.  Any/all questions or concerns should be directed to SummerCamp@si.edu.  Registration will close when the class is full.

Note:
This Master Class is also being offered August 1-5, 2022.

About the Instructor:
Sofia Elian has been the Lead Graphic Designer at Smithsonian Science Education Center (SSEC) for 4 years.  She is responsible for designing both digital and print media - creating learning materials to pair with and extend SSEC curricula and initiatives.  With a bachelor's in graphic design from American University focusing on both print and digital design, she combines her passions for design, science, social change, and cultural expression in all aspects of her work at SSEC.  She leads the initiative to incorporate DEAI principles in all aspects of her design work to ensure both digital and print learning materials are people-centered.

This program was developed with generous support from Johnson & Johnson.  For more information on SSEC, please visit
