The Smithsonian Jazz Masterworks Orchestra (SJMO) was founded in 1990 with an appropriation from Congress in recognition of the importance of jazz in American culture and its status as a national treasure. Now in its 20th year and the fifth of its series with The Smithsonian Associates, the orchestra delves into jazz's greatest works and performers. The SJMO is led by artistic and musical director David N. Baker.

One of the great alto saxophonists, Julian “Cannonball” Adderley burst onto the New York jazz scene in 1955 and formed a quintet with his brother Nat, a cornetist. In 1957, Miles Davis invited him to join his band, where he played until 1959. The period was short but produced such jazz landmarks as the Milestones and Kind of Blue albums. He also later recorded with Bill Evans, John Coltrane, Wes Montgomery, Art Blakey, and Oscar Peterson. Adderley led his own group from 1959 until his death in 1975.
