Instructor Adrienne Kralick’s painting of a Rembrandt self-portrait at an underpainting stage of the layering process

How did Peter Paul Rubens paint flesh that looks so lifelike? How did Rembrandt suffuse his canvases with light? For centuries, an important way of learning to paint was to study the old masters. Follow that tradition as you join instructor Adrienne Kralick in museum galleries and the studio to unlock the mysteries of how 17th-century artists achieved their signature effects.

Find new technical skills and new inspiration for your own work as you employ the full range of transparent and opaque paints to create a sense of depth and three-dimensional form and create portraits that share that distinctive Dutch glow.

Begin with a studio lecture and painting demonstration covering traditional period working methods, materials, brushwork, and use of color. Next, visit the National Gallery of Art to view Dutch paintings from an artist’s perspective and understand how they were created. Then apply what you’ve learned in studio sessions as you create your own Dutch-inspired masterpiece.
