Although Romare Bearden (1911–1988) worked in many mediums from oil and watercolor to various forms of printmaking, he is best known for his mixed-media collages and photomontages. His expressive and energetic compositions depict urban and rural life and the jazz scene.
After viewing an illustrated lecture on Bearden featuring pieces from the American Art Museum and Hirshhorn collections, students try their hand creating Bearden-inspired mixed-media compositions.
With instructor guidance, students begin collaging with a variety of fabrics, papers, cutouts, stencils and photographs, then experiment by adding paint and drawing materials. Elements of composition are covered, as are adhesives, supports, and methods of creating texture. Development of personal style and visual storytelling are encouraged. Students benefit from group critique.
