If you’ve read Aziz Ansari’s Modern Romance, you’ll definitely want to meet Christian Rudder. Ansari credits Rudder, co-founder and president of OkCupid, with research into our online selves that’s forever changed the way that we meet in the virtual world.  His years of experience analyzing data for one of the world’s largest dating websites have also given him insights into how in the real world our personal data have been used to spy on us, hire and fire us, and sell us stuff we don’t need.

In a fascinating evening, Rudder explains how personal information is being used to describe who we are—and what we hope for and dream about. These “big data,” Rudder asserts, are being used more and more as a way of explaining ourselves to ourselves. We’ve allowed the numbers to become the narrative of our time. Join Rudder in the casual setting of Hill Country Barbeque and enjoy light snacks and cocktails as he explores how we can restore some humanity to the equation that often defines our digital lives.

The paperback edition of his book, Dataclysm: Who We Are When We Think No One’s Looking (Broadway Books) is available for signing. (Purchasing a copy with your ticket is a smart idea; there will be a limited number of copies for sale at the event.)

Please note: Member + Book and Non-Member + Book pricing includes a copy of Dataclysm: Who We Are When We Think No One’s Looking.

Other Connections

Christian Rudder authors OkTrends, a popular blog that applies analyses of OKCupid’s research to the real-life dating world. Find out the best questions for a first date, and why a shared love of horror movies might be among the best predictors of determining your long-term potential with someone.
