Parallels and Peripheries: Migration and Mobility Daytime Tour
Wednesday, October 16, 2019 - 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m.
The work in Parallels and Peripheries explores how first-generation immigrant artists negotiate issues of migration, identity, visibility and invisibility in a time of social volatility. Each artist in the exhibition brings a unique and layered perspective, responding to the multicultural society in which we live. By spotlighting cultural nuances, rather than demonizing the differences, the exhibition draws our attention to the hearts and minds of disempowered communities around the world. In particular, this exhibition offers an opportunity to engage the margins, the pushed-aside, and the forgotten. Together, these artists ask you to have a conversation – a discourse that clarifies what is dominant in society and what made it that way.
Parallels and Peripheries is curated by Larry Ossei-Mensah, a Ghanaian-American, and current mentor of the Emerging Curator Program at VisArts. Ossei-Mensah is known around the world for exhibitions that use contemporary art as a means to redefine how we see ourselves in the world around us.
