Martin Sheen’s acting career spans more than five decades, including films like Apocalypse Now and Badlands, but to millions he is known simply as President Josiah Bartlet in the mold-breaking series The West Wing. Winning a Golden Globe and two Screen Actors Guild Awards for this role, he created an indelible portrait of a popular Democratic president trying to lead the country while in conflict with the Republican-dominated Congress. What became the hallmark of his character and the show was an emphasis on what goes on behind the scenes, the discussions and decision-making the public never sees.

In conversation with Ken Walsh, award-winning White House correspondent and columnist for U.S. News & World Report, Sheen discusses his iconic role, as well the impact of The West Wing on television’s depiction of government and how we view our real-life national leaders.
