Steeped in the Gothic and supernatural imagery of the Romantic era, Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein from 1818 is frequently described as the first science fiction novel. Joseph Luzzi, professor of literature at Bard College, leads participants through an exploration of the cultural sources, scientific elements, and literary devices that make Shelley’s book so inventive and groundbreaking.

Luzzi highlights how Shelley balances her inquiry into philosophical questions with the bold narrative strategies that have made her Frankenstein a mainstay of school and college curricula for generations of students.
