The Pan American World Airways China Clipper—one of the most remarkable airliners in aviation history—was created during the early 1930s at the enormous aviation complex of the Glenn Martin Company in Middle River, Maryland. Along with the Hawaii Clipper and Philippine Clipper, this four-engine flying boat pioneered the launch of trans-Pacific commercial aviation, pampering travelers with new levels of onboard luxury and comfort. Join aviator and transportation expert Scott Hercik to chase the ghost of the famed China Clipper.
The day begins at the Glenn L. Martin Maryland Aviation Museum, featuring a diverse fleet of Martin-built commercial and military aircraft. A museum staff member tells the story of Glenn Martin, his aviation empire, and the birth of the Clipper line. Tour the Flight Line for a behind-the-scenes look at the museum’s historic aircraft collection and learn about the remarkable aviation achievements made at Middle River.
Lunch takes place at the Carson’s Creekside Restaurant, situated along the path where Martin-made flying boats took off and landed on the watery runways of the Chesapeake Bay. During the meal, a representative of the Pan Am Historical Foundation provides background on the golden age of flying boats and Pan Am’s role in the development of international air travel. The daylong aviation odyssey concludes as a crew member from the 175th Wing of the Maryland Air National Guard offers a close-up look at the thundering A-10 “Wart Hog” jet aircraft.
