It’s in the Martini, the Manhattan, the Rob Roy, and the Negroni, but what do you really know about vermouth? If they think of it at all, most Americans likely consider vermouth only as a mysterious cocktail. It’s actually a fortified wine, not a spirit, flavored with aromatics, spices, and brandy. And there’s not a single type: dry vermouth is typically featured in a Martini, whereas sweet vermouth is usually found in a Manhattan.

Katie Dandridge, one of the cocktail experts behind the bar at Quill, the elegant lounge at Washington's Jefferson Hotel, discusses the history of vermouth and the variety of ways we drink it today. Sample some cocktails made with vermouth to find your favorite way of enjoying it.
