Scientists and artists share a natural curiosity in the world around them as well as a tenacity and focus that drive their work. Study of the natural world and the use of observation are also foundational tools they have in common.

Tonight, artist Shih Chieh Huang, acclaimed for his lightfilled robotic sculptures, talks about his experience in 2007 as a Smithsonian Artist Research Fellow at the Natural History Museum. Huang is joined by Smithsonian scientist Lynne Parenti, who guided him in understanding and appreciating the bioluminescent deep-sea creatures that informed Huang’s art and the creation of the exhibition Bright Beneath: The Luminous Art of Shih Chieh Huang at the Natural History Museum.

After learning about the science of bioluminescence, stick around to enjoy some of its magic, in the Bright Beneath Mingle at the Museum (starts at 7:30 p.m.), included in the price of admission. Among other things, participants engage in the creation of an “organic concept” installation with artist Huang, see and touch a bioluminescent sea creature, and partake of light hors d’oeuvres and a cocktail.

Read about the schedule and activities of the Bright Beneath Mingle at the Museum event included in your ticket.
