Whether you have never picked up a brush or haven’t painted in years, this 2-session workshop provides a solid foundation in the basics of working in oil, so that you’ll be on your way to painting like a pro.
The first session covers understanding and choosing materials; setting up your work space; getting started on a painting; methods of drawing on canvas; color theory and color mixing; and paint application, texture, and brush strokes.
The second session begins with an instructor-led tour of selected paintings at the National Gallery of Art to gain technical insights into great masterpieces. Students head back to the studio to put their new skills and inspirations to work and create a painting.
The workshop is designed to require minimal paint colors and brushes to keep supply costs low and create a solid foundation for the artist’s paintbox. Each day includes a lunch break; students provide their own meal.
Note: In-person programs are not recorded.
