The room Booth stayed in while at Dr. Mudd’s farm house (Dr. Samuel A. Mudd House Museum)

Please Note: The tour departs by motorcoach from downtown Washington, DC. Content delivered by the study leader on the way to the destination is an integral part of the study tour experience. Meeting the group once the tour is en route is discouraged.

Proof of COVID-19 vaccination is required for participation on all tours; additionally, current CDC and Smithsonian COVID-19 guidelines (at the time of the tour) will be followed, including but not limited to masks on the bus and indoors.

Fleeing Ford’s Theater on the night of April 14, 1865, John Wilkes Booth traveled through Maryland into Virginia, where, a few days later, he was found, shot, and died of his wounds. Retrace Booth’s escape route and learn about the personalities and intrigues surrounding the Lincoln assassination.

Stops include Ford’s; the house near Clinton, Maryland, of Mary Surratt, who was hanged for her involvement in the plot; and the house of Dr. Samuel A. Mudd, who set Booth’s broken leg.

Enjoy a seafood lunch at Captain Billy’s Crab House at Pope’s Creek Landing, near where Booth and conspirator David Edgar Herold crossed the Potomac. In Virginia, visit sites where they contacted local sympathizers and where Booth was captured and died.

Lunch is late; participants may wish to bring a snack and beverage.
