The Smithsonian Chamber Music Society celebrates its 37th season with musical masterpieces from the late-16th to mid-20th century, played on some of the world’s most highly prized musical instruments. This performance features music by Ferrabosco I, Mico, and Purcell. This is a six-concert series.

The season opens with the Smithsonian Chamber Orchestra presenting two works for winds—Dvorak’s Serenade, Op 44, and Stravinsky’s Symphonies of Wind Instruments (in the version the composer premiered in New York’s Town Hall in 1947)—plus Beethoven’s Fourth Symphony, in a particularly intimate and immediate guise. The Dvorak “theme” is taken up again in November, when the composer’s “American” quintet, a pendant to the better-known quartet—to be heard during January’s Axelrod Quartet concert—will be performed, along with the great, but relatively little known, quintet of Bruckner.

Smithsonian Chamber Orchestra membersThe ensemble includes Smithsonian Chamber Music Society (SCMS) regulars Mark Fewer and Steven Dann, plus talented newcomers Rory McLeod and Karen Dekker. In February, Boston Early Music Festival Orchestra concertmaster and Juilliard Historical Performance graduate program director Robert Mealy joins SCMS artistic director Slowik for a program of Bach sonatas. In March, Archibudelli’s Vera Beths returns with three of the members of The Knights—the innovative Brooklyn-based orchestral collective including violists Nicholas Cords and Max Mandel and violinist and artistic director Colin Jacobsen—for an evening of Mozart quintets. The Castle Trio, anchored by fortepianist Lambert Orkis, brings its passion for Beethoven to three heroic masterworks in April. The final concert in May holds the season’s earliest works, with a rare opportunity to hear a consort comprised of four of America’s leading gambists play on a group of antique instruments from the remarkable Caldwell Collection of Viols.
