October 18  Wines of the Southern Hemisphere Part 3: Perfect Pairings for the Holidays

As the holiday season approaches, food and wine come to mind. With so many flavors and endless possibilities, the wines of the southern hemisphere are particularly well equipped to pair with classic (and modern) holiday dishes. This delicious seminar explores how to select and pair wines like a professional sommelier to make every holiday meal memorable. With all the shopping, cooking, and cleaning, entertaining during the holiday season is stressful enough. The one thing you won't be stressing about are perfect food and wine pairings.

November 15 California's Central Coast

The Central Coast starts north of Los Angeles and stretches to just south of San Francisco. This is an area with many wine regions and a plethora of diverse terroirs unified by a shared spirit. It is a place that allows incredible wine stories to unfold through diverse viticulture and connection to the land. Virtually every variety imaginable grows well somewhere in the Central Coast, so there is something for everyone. This delicious session explores some of the best wines of various styles and varieties the Central Coast has to offer. As the leaves turn brown and the sky goes grey, enjoy some amazing wines from the Bay to LA.

Burgundy is one of the most complex and expansive wine regions on the planet. It is here that thousands of years of careful study of terroir have yielded an amazingly detailed and hyper complicated classification system of wines, vines, and vineyards. Amazingly, vineyards separated by only a few yards can command dramatically different prices, sometimes with a difference of thousands of dollars a bottle. But why? This deep dive explores the how, why, and what of Burgundy. Taste some exciting wines from appellations that producers see as the future of their region. The session will have you drinking and discussing Burgundy like a sommelier

Wine Tasting Kit Information

  • The cost includes curated personal tasting kits with enough wine for one person to sample the full lineup of wines.
  • Additional participants must register individually to receive their own tasting kits, which is an essential component of the series.
  • Each session will have separate kits available during two scheduled pick-up times the day before the program and the day of the program, 12–5 p.m., at the Shilling Canning Company (360 Water Street SE, Washington, DC; Metro: Navy Yard-Ballpark station, Green line).
  • NOTE: Patrons will receive additional wine tasting kit pick-up information by email prior to the program.
  • Due to state and federal laws, Smithsonian Associates cannot ship wine kits. However, SOMLYAY may be able to provide kits to participants outside the Washington, D.C., area (who must cover shipping costs). Please contact erik@thesomlyay.com for more information.

About Erik Segelbaum

Erik Segelbaum is a Wine Enthusiast 40 Under 40 Tastemaker for 2020 and Food &  Wine magazine’s 2019 Sommelier of the Year. He holds the designation of Advanced Sommelier through the Court of Master Sommeliers, one of fewer than 600 specialists in the world who hold this level of certification. Segelbaum is the former corporate wine and beverage director for Starr Restaurants, a wine journalist and educator, and chief vinnovation officer of SOMLYAY hospitality and private events consultancy.
