Organized to complement a landmark exhibition at the National Museum of Women in the Arts (NMWA), this lecture by art historian Aneta Georgievska-Shine explores the extraordinary contributions of Dutch and Flemish women to the artistic culture of the 17th and early 18th centuries. From well-known painters like Judith Leyster and Rachel Ruysch to printmakers and sculptors whose names are less familiar, women were involved in every aspect of the art world of the Low Countries. While their artistic pursuits were often constrained by social expectations, many of them were able to develop successful careers, proving their own creative worth in a male-dominated environment.
"Women Artists from Antwerp to Amsterdam, 1600–1750" is on view until January 11, 2026, at the National Museum of Women in the Arts in Washington, D.C. The exhibition is organized by NMWA in partnership with the Museum of Fine Arts in Ghent, Belgium, and travels to Ghent from March 7 through May 31, 2026.
