Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II

What magic they made. The songs of Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II burst into our lives 80 years ago, climbed into our hearts, and stayed there. Any list of favorites is endless, but filmmaker and cultural historian Sara Lukinson makes a start and offers a chance to find out more about these daring creators. Craftsmen, dramatists, perfectionists, melodists, and unlikely partners, not only did Rodgers and Hammerstein change the American musical, they changed us too. Now their songs of love and heartbreak, walking through a storm, a beautiful morning, paradises lost and found, and being human are always there beside us.

Lukinson’s abundant sampling of clips—including selections from such shows as Oklahoma!, Carousel, South Pacific, The King and I, and The Sound of Music—make this a moving and joyful evening to spend with Rodgers and Hammerstein.
