Working in black and white is an exciting strategy for advancing creative potential. Removing color from the equation pushes the artist to rely on other important elements such as value contrast, mark making, and composition.
Students have the opportunity to work from a variety of subject matter, including contemporary still life, landscape, street scenes, and simplified heads and figures. Begin with simple pencil techniques such as gesture and shading before progressing to charcoal and pastel, which serve as a bridge to the painting process. In the afternoon, students work with a wide range of wet and dry media in order to create dynamic compositions in black, white, and gray.
