Mary Hall Surface

Discover the power of reflective writing inspired by visual art guided by the founding instructor of the National Gallery of Art’s Writing Salon, Mary Hall Surface. Step into the Expressionist paintings of the fascinating early 20th-century German artist Gabriele Münter. Slow down, look closely, and reflect as you explore the window as a metaphor for shifting perspectives in our lives.

Designed for writers of all levels, the workshop invites you to look outward at paintings and to look inward through writing. These reflections can become creative fertile ground for poetry, memoir, personal essay, and more.

Surface is a teaching artist, playwright, theatre director and museum educator. She presents workshops nationwide in creative writing and drama as a Kennedy Center teaching artist, leads in-person Writers’ Studios nationally and internationally, and was a faculty member at Harvard’s Project Zero Classroom.

The workshop has a limited enrollment to maximize interaction among the instructor and students.
