This class is devoted to discussion about composition using a series of design exercises as a vehicle for understanding design concepts and principles. Examine pieces by various artists to discern the elements of composition and how the artists have used them to establish cohesiveness, movement, and rhythm in their artwork. Through the exercises, break down these elements and explore different strategies to construct successful mixed-media pieces using primarily collage, supplemented by painting. While participants may complete one or more pieces, the main objective is to understand design concepts and how to apply them in both representative and abstract artwork. Students work primarily on watercolor paper and mat board as substrates.
