As producers, writers, directors, and actors, Mark Duplass and Jay Duplass have made their mark in the world of independent film and television on the strength of a quirky and empathetic approach to storytelling. In conversation with NPR's Linda Holmes, they tell their story of a lifelong partnership based on a bond that’s resilient, affectionate, mutually empowering, and only mildly dysfunctional.
Drawing on their new book Like Brothers (Ballantine), they trace a professional path that took them from a childhood spent wielding an oversized home video camera in the suburbs of New Orleans to making a breakthrough short on a $3 budget to finding their feature Baghead at the center of a Sundance bidding war. They also explore how their closeness sabotaged their youthful romantic relationships, the jealousy each felt when the other stole the spotlight as an actor (Mark in The League, Jay in Transparent), and the challenges they faced on the set of their HBO series Togetherness—namely, too much togetherness. Wild Wild Country, a new Netflix documentary series they executive produced, has begun to create a lot of industry buzz.
