Gustav Mahler, 1902, by Emil Orlik

The music-loving public has embraced Mahler as the most important symphonic voice of fin-de-siecle Vienna. He died in 1911, before the cataclysmic events of the century, yet he appears to be a prophetic representative of our own time.  His inner life was insecure and anguished, even as his public persona was that of a charismatic conductor. Today, more recordings are being made of Mahler’s symphonies than those of Beethoven and Brahms. Popular Smithsonian music lecturer Saul Lilienstein takes an in-depth look at one of the seminal figures of the modern age and his music. Sessions are highlighted by music and DVD recordings.
