Just before the winter holidays in 1944, the strategically placed capital of Hungary was caught by surprise when it was suddenly surrounded by Soviet forces. During the Siege of Budapest, the “Pearl of the Danube” became the scene of some of the most devastating urban destruction during World War II. Campers see artifacts from World War II at the National Security Agency’s Cryptologic Museum and learn more about this strategic victory for the Allies through the use of miniature soldiers, war games, reference books, documentaries, and detailed models. Campers construct their own diorama models based on this unique urban terrain that ended in ruins.
