White-line woodcuts are multicolor images printed from a single block of wood. Also called Provincetown prints, they are a hybrid of monoprints and Japanese-style multi-block woodcuts. Learn to create your own by cutting a nature print or simple line drawing into a wood block with a knife or gouge, creating the “white lines” when printed. Color each area between the lines with watercolor or gouache and rub your paper with a wooden spoon to print the color, one section at a time. As in traditional woodblock printmaking, you can use your block over and over, creating original monoprints each time.
