Duccio di Buoninsegna and Giotto di Bondone revolutionized the field of Italian painting in the 14th century by breaking with the predominant Byzantine style—and in the process laid the foundations for European painting for centuries afterwards. Rocky Ruggiero, a specialist in the Early Renaissance, compares Duccio’s and Giotto’s art and examines the characteristics that defined their respective schools of Sienese and Florentine painting.
