By Lori VanKirk Schue

Trois crayons is a drawing technique using three colors of chalk: red, black, and white. Just as the great masters—such as Rubens, Watteau, and Boucher—created sketches for their paintings, students study tonal values with conté crayons on neutral papers such as gray, blue, or tan. Students hone skills in identifying light and shadow while creating drawings with full mid-range tones using the three colors. They learn to warm and cool these colors and better understand and produce tone and dimension. Confident drawing skill is recommended.
