Impressionist artists favored working in the vibrant medium of pastel because of its luminosity and color-layering effects. Working in open-air in the Enid A. Haupt Garden, capture the colors of nature and the interaction of light and shadows. Students use Cezanne’s color-blocking style to produce the brilliant and subtle effects achieved with pastel.
The class includes demonstrations and lectures on color theory, color mixing, optical mixing, and composition. View and discuss works by master pastel artists for inspiration and creative ideas. Students may work in chalk, oil pastel, or gouache, and should have basic drawing skills.
Note: In-person programs are not recorded.
