The Geology of Glacier National Park

The landscape of Glacier National Park, Montana, and surrounding areas reveal evidence of almost two billion years of geologic change. This evidence is preserved in various rock types, including their fossil content, their position and orientation, and the very shape of the mountains and valleys.

Geologist Callan Bentley offers a virtual field guide to Glacier National Park that focuses on four general geological topics: sedimentology and stratigraphy; structural geology and tectonic history; paleontology; and glaciers and recent climate change.

Bentley is assistant professor of geology at Piedmont Virginia Community College in Charlottesville, Virginia. Each summer, he teaches a one-week geology field course for science teachers in Glacier National Park.
