The Tiber River flows around the famous hills of Rome. Nourishing Rome for centuries, for the ancient Romans the river personified a majestic old man, crowned with laurel and holding a cornucopia. The Tiber’s reputation as a great river is questionable, but along its banks one finds some of Rome’s greatest monuments.

Join Renaissance art historian Elaine Ruffolo for an art-historical adventure along the Tiber River. Explore historical sites, including the Church of Sant'Angelo, the Temples of Vesta and Fortuna Virilis, the Bocca della Verità (Mouth of Truth), the Ara Pacis, and 26 bridges with their own stories to tell. The river has been immortalized throughout history in many great works of art. It has also witnessed the birth of Rome, barbarian destruction, medieval processions, and Renaissance celebrations.
