For centuries, the most celebrated female artist of the Italian Baroque was largely forgotten. But the work of Artemisia Gentileschi (1593–1656) is now enjoying a long overdue revival, greatly buoyed by the 2020 monographic exhibition at London’s National Gallery.

Working in the 17th century, Gentileschi’s career spanned more than 40 years and took her from Rome to Florence and Naples. She was widely admired during her lifetime, lauded for her bold use of color and depiction of strong women in paintings on Old Testament subjects such as Susanna and the Elders and Judith Beheading Holofernes. But her fame faded over the succeeding centuries as artistic tastes shifted away from dramatic naturalism towards a more classical style.

In this evening seminar, art historian Aneta Georgievska Shine explores her accomplishments as a woman painter who overcame personal and professional challenges to succeed in the age of Baroque—and again in our own time.
