FEATURED WINE REGION

Northern Italy

With more than a thousand indigenous varieties, the complexities of Italian wine can make even a sommelier’s head spin. Segelbaum comes to the rescue in his two-part exploration of Italian winemaking from top to "toe." He begins with an examination of northern Italy's winemaking regions including Piedmont, Lombardy, and the Tre-Venezie (Friuli-Venezia-Giulia). Learn why Nebbiolo is king of red grapes in the north, discover what makes Amarone so significant, get an introduction to the alpine whites of the northeast, and taste through some of the world’s best sparkling wines from Franciacorta.

ABOUT ERIK SEGELBAUM

Segelbaum holds the designation of Advanced Sommelier through the Court of Master Sommeliers, one of fewer than 600 specialists in the world who hold this level of certification. He is the former corporate wine and beverage director for Starr Restaurants, a wine journalist and educator, and chief vinnovation officer of SOMLYAY hospitality and private events consultancy.
