Archaeology enables us to reconstruct with a great degree of accuracy the city of Jerusalem as it appeared in the 1st century CE, where Jesus spent his final days on earth. In an illustrated presentation, archaeologist Jodi Magness surveys the history and archaeology of Jerusalem in the Herodian period (1st century BCE–1st century CE), ending with the city’s destruction by the Romans in 70 CE. 

She focuses on the buildings of King Herod the Great, particularly his reconstruction of the Second Temple and Temple Mount, and provides an overview of other key sites associated with Jesus in Jerusalem, including the Lithostratos pavement and Arch of Ecce Homo and the Church of the Holy Sepulcher. She also considers the evidence for the historicity of the traditions associating Jesus with some of these sites.

Magness is the Kenan distinguished professor for teaching excellence in early Judaism at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
