Here the imposing remains of the city’s ancient Roman baths and the Gothic Paris residence of the abbots of Cluny provide the fairy-tale backdrop for marvels of medieval art. Barbara Drake Boehm, Paul and Jill Ruddock Curator Emerita of The Met Cloisters, explores the museum, extensively renovated and reopened last year. Sometimes considered the French older sister of The Met Cloisters, the Cluny Museum safeguards masterpieces, including the Lady and the Unicorn tapestries, sculpture from the Cathedral of Notre-Dame that was buried during the French Revolution, a single gold rose created at the order of a 14th-century pope, an Islamic chess piece converted to Christian use, stained glass from Sainte-Chapelle, and a ceremonial Jewish wedding ring hidden by its owner during the 14th-century pandemic known as the Black Death.
