On a historic day in June of 1944, in one of the largest amphibious military assaults in history, Allied forces landed on the beaches of Normandy to begin their invasion of northern France and eventual liberation of Western Europe from Nazi Germany control. Throughout the week, campers learn about the key battles that took place during the Normandy Invasion, including those in Saint-Mere-Eglise and Carentan. Campers use miniature soldiers, war games, reference books, documentaries, and detailed models to understand this pivotal operation. They see WWII aircraft used during the Normandy landings and other artifacts at the Udvar-Hazy Center and the Air and Space Museum, stimulating ideas for building their own dioramas and terrain board.
