Campers visit the Air and Space Museum and Udvar-Hazy Center to learn about the history of kamikaze warfare and examine the events that led to Japan’s final surrender—the dropping of the first atomic bombs. Campers learn about the critical role the island played on the Pacific Front using reference books and documentaries. They create dioramas and fight battles with miniature soldiers, as well as engage in group-strategy games using large geographical maps. Fictional and nonfiction accounts, graphic novels, reference books, and related films and documentaries give campers a grounding in the period’s history.
