Author P.D. James

Author P.D. James's 14 books written over the past 33 years have sold more than ten million in the United States alone. PBS featured several of her novels in its "Mystery!" series.

Phyllis Dorothy James was born in Oxford, entered the civil service, and rose rapidly in the Home Office, eventually becoming principal in charge of the Criminal Policy Department. It was not until she was 40 that she began to write. After her retirement in 1979, she became a magistrate, chair of the Society of Authors, a governor of the BBC, and, in 1991, baroness.

In this program, Ms. James relates how her experiences helped her to create the nasty murders and ingenious plots that are her trademark.
