Stacy Keach and Michael Kahn: Inside a Creative Collaboration
Evening Seminar
Wednesday, February 26 - 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.

Stacy Keach first stepped into the role of Sir John Falstaff (and the requisite fat suit) in 1968 in a production in Central Park. He returns to Shakespeare’s ribald, boisterous, and ultimately endearing knight under the direction of Michael Kahn in productions of Henry IV, Parts 1 and 2 that open in repertory during March and April at the Shakespeare Theatre Company.

In a sure-to-be fascinating conversation, Keach and Kahn, the company’s longtime artistic director, sit down to explore the process by which that character and the plays in which he’s featured will reach the STC’s stage. They’ll cover topics such as the relationship between actor and director (both in general and their own working connection); how the productions evolve from concept to rehearsal room to stage; the experience, perspective, and insights each brings to their theatrical partnership; and how their mutual love of Shakespeare has provided one the strongest through-lines of their careers.

Along the way, they examine the enduring appeal of Falstaff for both actors and audiences (Queen Elizabeth I was a notable early fan), and how approaches to staging and performing Shakespeare have changed over the decades. The evening is the perfect curtain-raiser for seeing the results of a unique creative collaboration at the Shakespeare Theatre Company this spring.

Program attendees receive a voucher for a 10% discount on a ticket to a performance of the current season’s final productions at the Shakespeare Theater Company, Henry IV, Parts I and II (in repertory March 25–June 8) and Noel Coward’s Private Lives (May 29–July 13). The voucher will be distributed at the program.
