Leland Bryant
Photography Instructor
biography
Leland Bryant received his Bachelor of Fine Arts in Photographic Illustration
from the Rochester Institute of Technology, and his Masters of Fine Arts in
Interdisciplinary Arts from Goddard College. He worked for several years
in sales at Penn Camera (Washington, D.C.). He first started teaching
photography at this time, and has served as an instructor for over 25 years.
He has taught at a range of institutions, including McGraw-Hill Continuing
Education, Prince Georges Community College, Ann Arundel Community College,
and the Smithsonian. He was a columnist for three years at Havelin Communications
and wrote the Technical Jargon columnfor The Shooter's
Rag, covering topics such as lighting, color balance, filtration, film
types, shooting techniques and optics. Since 1991, he served as a photographer
and lab manager to Smithsonian's Freer and Sackler Galleries, Washington DC. He
retired from service in 2008 to devote more time to teaching and making art.
artist statement
Art has many definitions.
I subscribe to simple interpretation: To make art is to make meaning.
Through my images I strive to stop the internal dialogue, the chatter of a busy life, for my audience and myself and provide a moment of pause in which to ponder the poignancy of the present.
Teaching Philosophy
For me, teaching is another form of learning. In a room with myself
and nine other students, my knowledge represents one-tenth of that in the room
in which I am a co-learner. In this way, the means by which we come to know
maintains a dynamic stance which adapts to the group, growing and changing
with each session in a safe area where positive critical commentary is encouraged
and welcomed.
