We at The Smithsonian Associates mourn the loss of renowned journalist David Brinkley. He was a wonderful man and a superb journalist and we were very fortunate to present him at the Smithsonian several years ago.

David M. Brinkley, born in Wilmington, North Carolina, began his journalism career at a newspaper in North Carolina and came to Washington in 1943, when he joined NBC News, covering Franklin D. Roosevelt's weekly news conferences as a writer for radio.

He later re-created the excitement of those years in a book, Washington Goes to War, assisted by his historian son, Alan. In 1956, Brinkley teamed with Chet Huntley to cover the political conventions. The partnership led to "The Huntley-Brinkley Report," which attracted viewers for 14 years. After Huntley's retirement in 1970, Brinkley did commentary and anchored documentary series, first on NBC and then at ABC.

In this Nov. 17, 1995 recording, he recounts key moments in his career and discusses contemporary politics in an interview by his son, historian Alan Brinkley.
