The Wolves of Yellowstone: 25 Years of Science and Discovery

This year marks the 25th anniversary of the reintroduction of wolves to Yellowstone National Park, one of the greatest wildlife conservation and restoration achievements begun in the 20th century. Since 1995, scientists have studied the animals’ myriad behaviors, from predation to mating to wolf-and-pup play, and built a one-of-kind field study that bears witness to how the arrival of top predators can change an entire ecosystem and the impacts on prey, pack composition, and beyond.

Hear the incredible story of the wolves’ return from Douglas Smith, Daniel Stahler, and Daniel Macnulty, three of the experts and project biologists responsible for the reintroduction, study, and management of the iconic carnivores. They discuss  what they learned from the restoration effort about individual wolves, population dynamics, wolf–prey relationships, genetics, disease, management and policy, behaviors and interactions with other species, and the rippling ecosystem effects wolves have had on Yellowstone’s wild and rare landscapes. The team also offers solutions to ongoing controversies and debates and summarizes what we can learn from the extraordinary Yellowstone Wolf Project.
