Advanced photography students capture the strength and beauty of the National Mall, from the coolness of polished marble to the tranquil forms of our national monuments illuminated against the evening sky.

This class combines eight classroom sessions including lectures, discussion, darkroom work, and critiques with five on-location shooting sessions that will be conducted outside of regular class time (subject to weather conditions). Emphasis is given to the special equipment, film, processing, and technical and creative challenges associated with nighttime photography. Students explore photographing at sunset and after-dark and light-painting techniques.

Darkroom experience is required. Bring a manual camera, tripod, cable release, light meter (if owned), small flashlight, timer, black-and-white negative film, and note-taking supplies to the first class. Students work in black-and-white film. On-location sites are discussed on the first night of class. All developing chemicals are provided.

Instructor: Paul Matthai

8 class/darkroom sessions plus 5 on-location shooting sessions; 3 hours each (no class Nov. 12)
