Vesuvius

Italy has long been a focal point for the field of volcanology, thanks to many notable volcanoes such as Vesuvius, Etna, Stromboli, and Vulcano. Join volcanologist Kirt Kempter for an exploration of the country’s volcanic past, present, and future.

Why do these volcanoes exist? What do the deposits from the 79 A.D. eruption of Vesuvius tell us about the eruption itself? What is the significance of the massive caldera-forming eruptions of the past, including the Campanian eruption approximately 39,000 years ago that produced pyroclastic flows that crossed the Bay of Naples for a direct hit across the Sorrento peninsula?

Kempter uses geologic maps, photos, and Google Earth imagery to help reveal the ongoing role volcanoes play as an integral part of Italy’s fascinating geological story.
