PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

Venice, the jewel of the Adriatic, started out as little more than a mudbank settled by refugees fleeing enemies of the Roman Empire. But by the 15th century, it was one of the wealthiest city’s in Europe, opening the way for public patronage of the arts as the Venetian school of painting was reaching the height of its power and influence.

In a society as conscious of tradition as Venice, the success of artists depended on their ability to evoke and blend with the glorious past. The golden period of the Serenissima Republic is reflected in the art generated for its churches, confraternities, and palaces, including works by Bellini, Tintoretto, and Tiepolo, among others. Art historian Elaine Ruffolo traces the history of this fabled city and the art and architecture created there.
