"The Swimming Hole" (detail) by Thomas Eakins, 1884–85

Thomas Eakins (1844–1916) spent a lifetime on a quest to create the most accurate portrayal of the human figure. Achingly realistic psychological portraits and paintings of the human body in dynamic motion—such as his famous rowers in action—established Eakins as a master of his medium. He is also one of the late-19th-century’s most controversial artists, remembered today not only for his oeuvre, but for the mark he left on art history through his extraordinary work as a teacher unafraid to push the envelope.

Art critic and author Judy Pomeranz examines the life of this exceptional American painter and his impact on the course of art history.
