The Supreme Court: A Preview of the New Term
Thursday, September 12, 2019 - 10:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
U.S. Supreme Court in autumn
The afternoon portion of this program has limited seats on sale!
Each fall, the Supreme Court justices begin hearing and deliberating the country’s most important—and often most controversial—legal cases. Get in on the conversation in this daylong seminar in which top experts on the Supreme Court preview some of the cases the court will take up.
10 a.m.–12 p.m. Inside the Court
The day begins at the Supreme Court, in the same room where these cases are argued. Court officers explain the traditions and procedures of the Supreme Court, how a case makes its way there, and how the judges reach a decision.
12 p.m.–1:30 p.m. Lunch
Participants provide their own lunch, or may purchase it in the Supreme Court’s cafeteria.
1:30–3:30 p.m. Perspectives on the Court
At the Ripley Center, legal experts debate critical issues raised in some of the cases the court will hear. The panel includes Noel Francisco, who represents the United States before the Supreme Court; Joan Biskupic, CNN legal analyst; Elaine J. Goldenberg, partner at Munger, Tolles & Olson; and Roman Martinez, partner and member of the firm’s Supreme Court and Appellate Practice at Latham & Watkins. Kannon Shanmugam, chair of the Supreme Court and Appellate Practice Group and managing partner at Paul Weiss serves as moderator.
