From Jaws to “Shark Week,” we have been conditioned to see sharks as terrifying cold-blooded predators. But documentarian, conservationist, founder of Safeguard the Seas non-profit, and author William McKeever presents another view of them: Evolutionary marvels that are in the greatest danger of their 450-million-year history. We can’t afford to lose these animals, which play an integral part in maintaining the health of the world’s oceans and, ultimately, the planet.

In his new book, Emperors of the Deep, McKeever dispels our common misconceptions that sharks are human predators as he explores the hidden lives of the Mako, the Tiger, the Hammerhead, and the Great White.

During a private screening of an excerpt from the book’s companion documentary film, we see McKeever take solo dives with sharks (and without a cage) to observe them at close range in their natural habitat. He also meets with scientists all over the world to share scientific discoveries from the frigid waters of the Arctic Circle to the coral reefs of the tropical Central Pacific,

This evening, McKeever sounds an urgent call to protect this species—which holds the key to the ocean’s survival—before climate change and human hunters drive it to extinction.

Emperors of the Deep (HarperOne) is available for purchase and signing.
