Homer’s epic poems the Iliad and Odyssey, masterful retellings of the legendary Trojan War and its aftermath, mark the dawn of Western literature. The ancient Greeks regarded these works as both great poetry and the key teaching texts of their culture. Classical archeologist Frederick Winter delves into a time when tempestuous gods and heroic mortals fought for glory as he examines the Greeks’ experiences of war such as separation and homecoming from the perspective of the latest scholarship and archaeological findings.
Winter, a former professor of classics at the City University of New York, guides a journey through the world of the poems from the great 2nd-millennium B.C. citadels of Mycenae and Troy into the banquet halls of 8th-century B.C. Homeric Greece, re-creating the epic performances and the poems that have engaged us from antiquity until today.
