Jewelry by Karen Christians

Learn new techniques as you create unique jewelry pieces inspired by the Burning Man event’s 2018 art theme, iRobot. Karen Christians, an educator and maker in the metal arts and co-author of Jewelry of Burning Man, leads this one-day workshop appropriate for all skill levels.

Using cloisonné-based techniques, students fabricate colorful pendants and earrings using epoxy resin to create texture, color, and pattern without relying on high-fired enamels. Begin by building a library of colors using a paper template and resin samples mixed with a variety of materials, such as dry-paint pigments, kitchen spices, and teas. The uniquely colored and textured resins are then used in conjunction with flattened wire to adorn and embellish the jewelry pieces, which include a cast-bronze, robot-themed pendant.

A materials kit fee ($30) is payable to the instructor and includes the cast pendant, four geometric shapes, findings, flat wire, sandpaper, and templates. Additional design components, if desired, are available for purchase from the instructor.

One 7-hour session with lunch break (students provide their own)
