The buildings that frame the National Mall represent a range of styles, from Romanesque (the Castle) to Beaux Arts (Museum of Natural History) to Expressionist (American Indian Museum). Learn to capture their distinctive essences as you produce freehand sketches of Smithsonian buildings and other places in and around the Mall.

Instructor Eric J. Jenkins is an architect, professor, and author who believes that understanding the designed world begins by looking at things differently—a process that’s both visual and tactile. Students sketch using a variety of analytical approach, focusing on producing drawings that are exploratory and diagnostic rather than direct pictorial representations.

Jenkins’s most recent book, Drawn to Design: Analyzing Architecture Through Freehand Drawing (Birkhauser, 2012), explores why and how freehand drawing can promote design awareness. No drawing experience is required.
